Pre-Conference Workshop on Roles, Best Practices, and the Future of ISE Networks, ASTC Annual Conference Columbus, OH, Oct. 12, 2012

After hearing a survey of informal science education networks, such as STAR_Net, NISEnet, the National Girls Collaborative Program, Science Festivals, and others, workshop participants reviewed network structures, what needs they serve, and evaluations about their roles and effectiveness; and concluded by discussing best practices and the potential for linking networks together. Materials presented for the workshop are available upon request from: Robert L. Russell, brussell@ncil.spacescience.org.

Seminar on Learning Theory and Informal Exhibit and Program Design, ASTC Annual Conference Columbus, OH, Oct. 13, 2012

This seminar invited participants to reflect on learning theories underlying the design of exhibits and programs. They prepared by reading short articles by Dewey, Oppenheimer, Pirsig, and Hawking as background to small group discussions of how to design exhibits and programs that provide exemplary informal learning experiences and promote inquiry and reflection. Materials presented for the workshop are available upon request from: Robert L. Russell, brussell@ncil.spacescience.org.

Expanding Informal Science for Latinos: Museums and Programs that Work

The panel highlighted best practices for planning informal science for Latino students and families. An overview of programs-science center outreach, a bilingual science center, and bilingual exhibits-provided the background for discussing best practices concerning culture, family, language, media, and community involvement. Presenters included Robert L. Russell on planning programs for Latino families; Steve Yalowitz on bilingual labels and language issues; and Patrick Lopez on designing a welcoming museum for Latinos and building relationships between museums and the Latino community. Materials presented for the workshop are available upon request from: Robert L. Russell, brussell@ncil.spacescience.org.
